The latest must-play Pokémon game? This Minecraft map

A newMinecraft map has an ambitious goal: recreate the full-length, single-player Pokémon experience in-game. Developed by a team called Phoenix Projects, Pokémon Cobalt and Amethyst features a complete region full of more than a hundred original Pokémon, gyms, trainer battles and Pokémon League — all within the world of Minecraft.

The trailer above shows a little bit of what to expect from the map, which preserves the unique blocky look of Minecraft but ports over the classic Pokémon battle system. Mostly, though, it offers instructions to players on how to install the map into their games.

For a better sense of what Pokémon Cobalt and Amethyst looks like, watch the first part of the official walkthrough below to see how well Phoenix Projects translated Pokémon into the world-building adventure game.

Pokémon Cobalt and Amethyst has been in development since 2014, when the team published a proof of concept to the Minecraft subreddit. A prototype of the map, focused on the trainer battle mechanics, launched in June 2015. It went on to garner viral success, and players remarked upon how similar the recreated battling was to actual Pokémon games.

In the months since, the team has published an alpha, beta and, finally, the first full version of the highly anticipated map. Although it requires an unmodded copy of Minecraft to play, it’s definitely worth checking out for Pokémon fans of the official and unofficial projects alike.
