Pixar announces new original film, Soul

On Wednesday, Disney and Pixar revealed a new original movie coming to theaters next year: Soul. A brief plot description shed a little light on a project that, until now, has been completely in the dark.

Pixar will take you on a journey from the streets of New York City to the cosmic realms to discover the answers to life’s most important questions.

Soul arrives in theaters on June 19, 2020. Previously, Disney announced an untitled Pixar film for that date, but this clears up speculation that movie could be a sequel to an existing property. There is no news on the casting, but Pete Docter (Up, Inside Out) will direct.

After Toy Story 4 this summer, the next Pixar feature is the “suburban fantasy” Onward, which stars Chris Pratt and Tom Holland as two elf brothers looking for their father. The movie is set to hit theaters on March 6, 2020, just a few months earlier than Soul. With two new original titles after a flurry of belated sequels — Monsters University! Finding Dory! Cars 3! Incredibles 2! Toy Story 4! — 2020 marks Pixar’s return to original content, something Pixar president Jim Morris insisted in 2016.
