These plant molecules moonlight as internal thermometers

Daffodils are particularly temperature-sensitive plants

Scientists have long known that molecules known as phytochromes help plants detect light during the day and adjust growth accordingly. Now, thanks to a 12-year study involving researchers from four countries, they have discovered that the very same molecules do double duty at night, switching from light-sensors to temperature detectors. The researchers say the discovery could lead to tougher crops.

Bog-pickled dinosaur brains make for a remarkable fossil

The discovery raises the possibility that some dinosaurs had larger brains than we thought

Archaeologists find dinosaur bones on a fairly regular basis, but rarely do they find fossilized soft tissues, which decay over time and eventually vanish from existence – unless they are stored in some very special conditions, that is. For the first time, scientists have described fossilized dinosaur brain tissue which most likely belonged to a Iguanodon-like species that plunged its noggin into a swamp around 133 million years ago, "pickling" the sample in the process.
