E-tags could soon make flimsy paper tags a thing of the past

Waiting to check-in at the airport is up there with sitting through an eight-hour budget meeting, as one of the most boring ways to waste time. Thankfully, one of the latest ideas to hit air travel – permanent bag tags – could soon reduce the waiting time to nil. New York-based One Bag Tag is zeroing in on this trend and hoping that its permanent luggage tag will be the only one that travellers will ever need.

Drones for medical delivery? There’s no bad blood

Using drones to deliver goods is one of the technology's most tantalizing possibilities, and the more efficient transportation of blood products in particular is already gathering considerable steam. Looking to rule out the possibility of these samples spoiling en route, scientists have loaded drones up with blood bags and closely monitored their makeup before and after the journey, finding that the flight had no observable impact on the quality of the goods.

Although over half of all cases of blood poisoning prove fatal, the condition can be cured if caught early. That's why doctors typically start administering antibiotics as soon as they even suspect that harmful bacteria are present in the bloodstream. Using these medications too often, however, can lead to antibiotic resistance. With that in mind, an international team of scientists is developing an alternative method of blood purification – it involves drawing the bacteria out with magnets.
