Incredibles 2’s opening weekend sets two big milestones

Incredibles 2’s first weekend in theaters will set an opening-weekend record for both animated features and PG-rated films. Disney and Pixar expect the film to bring $180 million in ticket sales over its first three days, which will easily overtake the previous titleholders — both of which are also Disney-owned flicks.

Prior to Incredibles 2, the best domestic box-office take for a feature-length animated film was 2016’s Finding Dory, at $135 million. And among PG-rated films, the live-action Beauty and the Beast (which premiered in March 2017) had the previous top opening weekend, at $174 million.

Incredibles 2 keeps the cash firehose pouring for Disney; nine of the top 10 best opening weekends (domestic) all time are Disney properties, three of them coming this year: Avengers: Infinity War (April) at No. 1, Black Panther at No. 6 (February) and Incredibles 2, currently No. 8. But they may get company soon when Universal’s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom premieres June 22.

The movie is a critical hit as well, drawing a 94 percent fresh rating from critics according to Rotten Tomatoes. And our review concurs, calling it a delight that picks up right where the 2004 original left off.
