The Immortals Gaming Club (IGC), the parent company of the Immortals esports teams and the Los Angeles Valiant Overwatch League team, has acquired Infinite Esports, the parent company of OpTic Gaming and the Houston Outlaws Overwatch League team. The acquisition was announced on Wednesday in a press release from IGC.
IGC will take control of all of Infinite’s many teams across a variety of different brands. It will maintain a presence in both the Overwatch League and Riot Games’ League Championship Series (LCS). OpTic Gaming will continue to compete in the competitive Call of Duty tournaments. IGC will continue to compete in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive esports with its own team, MIBR, and will divest entirely from the OpTic Gaming CS:GO team.
This won’t be Immortals’ first trip into competition in the LCS. The team was previously seen as one of the league’s most prestigious teams. However, when Riot moved to franchise the league at the beginning of the 2018 season, Immortals wasn’t included in those plans, much to the surprise of fans. With the purchase of OpTic Gaming’s parent company, Immortals, and IGC, will be able to reenter the LCS as one of the league’s core franchises by changing up the OpTic Gaming to Immortals. OpTic will continue to participate in the league under its current name for the remainder of 2019, and will be rebranded to Immortals in 2020. OpTic Gaming is currently 4-0 after the first two weeks of the LCS Summer Split.
As for the Overwatch League, there are now two teams that are now presided over by IGC. This is the first major sale of any Overwatch League franchise, let alone to another franchise that’s in the league. According to a press release, IGC will attempt to facilitate a sale of the Houston Outlaws to a third-party. Until then, the Houston Outlaws will be run by IGC as an entirely separate entity from their own LA Valiant team.
According to a statement included from the president and CEO of Activision Blizzard Esports Leagues and the Overwatch League commissioner, Pete Vlastlica, the Outlaws will also have heavy league office supervision to help ensure that the league is able to verify competitive integrity while IGC controls both teams.
