Here’s what the Minecraft movie is about

Warner Bros.’ Minecraft movie has a new director in Peter Sollett, whose work includes TV series The Path for Hulu and films Freeheld and Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist. Sollett replaces It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia co-creator Rob McElhenney, who bowed out of the film last year.

What’s more interesting than a new director for the Minecraft movie — which, if we’re going by a dozen or so other video game film adaptation attempts, is likely to never reach theaters — is the film’s reported plot. According to Variety, the Minecraft movie will tell the story of “a teenage girl and her unlikely group of adventurers who, after the malevolent Ender Dragon sets out on a path of destruction, must save their beautiful, blocky Overworld.”

That story synopsis appears to come courtesy of writers Aaron and Adam Nee, who were tapped to write the Minecraft movie script when McElhenney quit the project. McElhenney worked on a previous version of the story with writer Jason Fuchs, who helped pen the scripts for Wonder Woman and Ice Age: Continental Drift.

Warner Bros. and Mojang have been working on a Minecraft movie in some form since early 2014. The companies’ first attempt involved director Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum, Stranger Things) who proposed a Goonies-style adventure set in the world of Minecraft. McElhenney joined the project in 2015 with an expectation of a 2019 theatrical release.
