Here’s what GoldenEye 007 HD could have looked like

A little over 30 minutes of gameplay allegedly captured from the cancelled HD remake of GoldenEye 007 was recently posted to the YouTube channel of Rare Thief, a site that specializes in showing footage and assets of shelved projects and prototypes from developer Rare.

Rare Thief has previously shown gameplay from titles like Twelve Tales: Conker 64, the original family-friendly version of the notoriously raunchy Conker’s Bad Fur Day.

While the footage doesn’t show off the multiplayer that made GoldenEye a smash hit in 1997, it does feature five missions from the single player campaign. Also appearing is the game’s seamless optional switch between the original Nintendo 64 graphics and the detailed high definition textures.

Some assets are notably missing from the unfinished port, of course, like this poor fellow who has no head:

Although you won’t be able to tell from the video itself, the counter in the top-left indicates that the game would have run at a very steady 60 frames per second.

The HD re-release of GoldenEye was originally planned for the Xbox 360 in 2008 before its cancellation due to copyright conflicts with Nintendo. When Rare’s 30th anniversary game collection Rare Replay was released last year for the Xbox One, many noted the absence of GoldenEyefrom the compilation’s roster. Rare responded by saying that they preferred to only include original Rare properties in Rare Replay.
