Golf R and GTI come in for attention at Worthersee

The team of apprentices behind Volkwagen's Golf GTI Heartbeat

Hot on the heels of its record-setting lap at the Nordschleife, Volkswagen has released two Golf concepts for the annual GTI fan meeting at Worthersee. The Golf GTI Heartbeat, which was created by young apprentices within VW, gets a thumping stereo to match its honeycomb paintjob and 295-kW (395-hp) engine, while the Golf R Wagon has also been kitted out with a unique color scheme and more power.

“World’s smallest engine” to power microscopic robots

Cambridge scientists have created an engine from gold nanoparticles that literally explodes into action as part ...

It is often said that size matters. At the nano-scale level, where a lot of current research is being done, this adage also holds true, and several scientific teams have laid claim to creating the "world's smallest engine" built from particles of ever-shrinking dimensions. The latest, a nano-scale engine made from tiny charged particles of gold and developed by researchers at the University of Cambridge, is claimed to be the smallest of them all.

Disposable laser produced with inkjet printing tech

Some of the inkjet-printed pixels (yellow) on a lasing capsule, with a coin for scale

Most of the lasers used in items such as DVD players or optical mice are inorganic. They last much longer than organic lasers (which utilize carbon-based materials to amplify light), but they're also comparatively expensive and complex to make, plus their range of wavelengths is limited. Developing more durable organic lasers would be one way of addressing the situation, but a European research team has come up with another – just make them really cheap and easily-replaceable.

These boots were made for flying: A chat with France’s very own jet-powered fly boy, Franky Zapata

Gizmag talks to Franky Zapata about the Flyboard Air, and the next generation of flying devices

On the last day of April we joined Zapata Racing in the south of France to witness an attempt to remain aloft for more than 280 meters and snatch the "farthest flight by hoverboard" record from Alexandru Duru. That record was pulverized when the Flyboard Air covered over 2 km in around seven minutes. We managed to grab a few words with a jubilant but quite exhausted Franky Zapata after his record-breaking flight.
