Breakthrough is Destiny 2: Forsaken’s new PvP mode

Destiny 2’s PvP offerings have remained static since the game launched last year. But Game Informer reports that Destiny 2: Forsaken will introduce a new Crucible gametype called Breakthrough, a competitive-only mode that tasks players with capturing points.

When the match starts, two teams of four will be vying to capture the same point, called the Breaker. Once the Breaker has been captured, the mode will shift from a neutral game to attackers versus defenders. Those who won the Breaker will begin assaulting a new point, the enemy team’s Vault. The losers will need to defend their Vault from the attackers.

If the attackers can manage to capture the Vault in time, they win. However, if the defenders can hold their own against the attackers for long enough, they get the point instead. Like all competitive modes, Breakthrough is round-based, although we’re currently unsure how many rounds will be in each match.

The goal of Breakthrough is pretty simple, and not entirely dissimilar to a capture-the-point mode like Control. However, Breakthrough offers a risk/reward-style objective that forces players to be confident or fall to their own hubris.

Since Destiny 2’s launch, the competitive playlist has only offered a choice between Survival and Countdown. With the new Glory grind being a popular activity, Breakthrough should make the playlist a little more interesting.

Destiny 2: Forsaken will be released for PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One on Sept. 4.
