Apple Music introduces a classical section curated by Deutsche Grammophon

Apple Music has launched a curated channel dedicated to classical music. Created by one of the most prominent classical music labels in the world, Deutsche Grammophon, the new section features performance videos, audio albums, and three radio stations that are dedicated to playing music from Beethoven, Mozart, and Bach.

Aptly called the “DG Playlist,” the Apple Music section is highlighted by the 2008 Salzburg Festival staging of Gounod’s “Roméo et Juliette” featuring star tenor Rolando Villazón. This alone offers a 32-track visual album that you can watch all at once or in parts. The video represents the first time the platform as offered a full-length opera.

Deutsche Grammophon promises to update the channel on a regular basis, and hopefully, it will. For now, it’s somewhat limited. Besides Villazón, you’ll also find artists Daniil Trifonov and Peter Gregson represented. There are also special video performances from Daniil Trifonov and Ildar Abdrazakov.

In 2016, Deutsche Grammophon became the first classical label to establish a curator channel on Apple Music. The partnership has continued to develop, delivering over two dozen playlists and creating the foundations for the future curatorial collaboration with Apple Music.

Dr. Clemens Trautmann, President Deutsche Grammophon explains:

The curatorial power of the Yellow Label and our vibrant artist community has always been exceptional, in record stores and in the digital space. In a world where attention spans have become shorter and classical music content more ubiquitous, people must think wisely before spending their limited time and resources. Together with our partner Apple Music, we aim to enable discovery and provide orientation to everything that is essential in classical music. We also embrace the opportunity to present short-form and long-form video productions in a significant way, making the service a cornerstone of DG’s global audio-visual strategy.
